To enroll in a study program at the AMD Akademie Mode & Design, you must fulfill certain admission requirements. These requirements differ, among other things, whether you are interested in a Bachelor’s or Master’s study program, and if the study programs are artistic and creative or business-oriented.

The general admission requirements are listed below. Specific information on the individual study programs can be found on the respective program page.

BACHELOR’S STUDY PROGRAMS

The most important admission requirement for a Bachelor’s study program at the AMD is a university entrance qualification (German “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung”). In terms of higher education law, the AMD is part of the Hochschule Fresenius, which has its headquarters in the German State of Hesse. Therefore, your university entrance qualification must be valid for a study program in Hesse. You can prove your university entrance qualification through one of the following options:

  • General university entrance qualification from Germany (German “Abitur”)
The general university entrance qualification entitles you to take up a study program in all German federal states and in all fields of study. A qualification equivalent to the general university entrance qualification is also held by those who have successfully completed a an accredited Bachelor’s study program at a state or state-recognized university of cooperative education.
  • International school-leaving degree
As educational systems differ around the world, we will need to check whether your school-leaving certificate specifically qualifies you to study in Germany. The AMD as part of Hochschule Fresenius is subject to the Hessian Higher Education Act and the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and the Arts will need to officially approve your qualifications.
  • University Qualification Examination (German “Feststellungsprüfung“/Studienkolleg)
If you have an international school-leaving certificate that does not specifically entitle you to study at a university in Germany, you can take the university qualification examination (“Feststellungsprüfung”). This is also available at Hochschule Fresenius. At Studienkolleg NRW, we offer focus courses to prepare you for the Feststellungsprüfung. You can also apply for these preparatory courses and the subsequent Bachelor’s program through our Pre-Bachelor. More information about Studienkolleg NRW is available here.
  • AMD entrance examination
International applicants who have a secondary school leaving diploma and qualify to enter a Bachelor program in their home country but do not meet the German higher education entrance qualification, are entitled to take the AMD Akademie Mode & Design entrance examination. This test is free of charge and consists of a 120-minute written online test and a 30-minute oral test. If you pass the test, you will have direct access to our undergraduate study programs. The tasks and questions assess your methodological, specialist, analytical, and communicative skills, which are necessary for successfully completing your studies.

Please note that if you have taken the Test AS, SAT, ACT, ITB or Gaokao you may be exempt from taking the AMD entrance examination, provided that your score is satisfactory.

If you have taken any of the above-mentioned tests, you are welcome to send us your score report.
  • Advanced technical certificate from Germany (German “Fachhochschulreife” or Fachabitur”)
The advanced technical certificate makes you eligible to study at a university of applied sciences or in a two-cycle study program at a university in the federal states identified in the certificate.
  • Subject-restriced university entrance qualification from Germany (German “Fachgebundene Hochschulreife”)
With the subject-restricted university entrance qualification, you can begin a study program in the corresponding subject area and in the federal states shown on the certificate. A qualification corresponding to the subject-restricted university entrance qualification is also held by those who have completed the basic studies at a university of applied sciences, in a tiered study program at a university, or a comparable study section.
  • Vocational qualification
Your are also eligible to study at the AMD if you hold a master craftsman certificate or a vocational qualification in accordance with the act on access to higher education institutions in the state of Hesse for people with professional qualifications. You need either
  • a completion of a professional advance training of at least 400 hours or
  • a technical college, vocational, or administrative academy qualification or
  • a “Mittlere Reife” school leaving degree, successful completion of a state-recognized commercial apprenticeship (at least 3 years) with grade 2.5 or higher, plus a written agreement with AMD stating that you’ll attain at least 18 credit points in your first semester or 30 credit points in your first year of studying or
  • successful completion of a state-recognized commercial apprenticeship (at least 2 years) with subsequent professional experience lasting at least two years as well as a special university admission assessment.

Artistically gifted applicants who do not have one of the above-mentioned university entrance qualifications may nevertheless be admitted to study in the following study programs, provided they pass a separate aptitude test:

  • English-language study program: Fashion Design (B.A.)
  • German-language study programs: Mode Design (B.A.), Interior Design (B.A.) Produkt Design (B.A.), and Marken- und Kommunikationsdesign (B.A.).

To be admitted to an English-language Bachelor’s program, you need English language skills at level B2.

Our German-language bachelor’s programs include certain English-language courses. Therefore, you must proof English language skills at level B1 of the European Framework of Reference (or equivalent) for these study programs.

Applicants from abroad must have German language skills at level DSH 1 or TestDaF level TDN 3 (or equivalent) for German-language bachelor’s programs.

Your grade point average is irrelevant for admission to a bachelor’s study program at the AMD. It is much more important for us to get to know you personally: What motivates you? What are your professional goals? What experience and skills do you have?
