Effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on studying abroad

The German Foreign Office has lifted the worldwide travel warning and has been working with country-specific travel and safety instructions since October 1, 2020.  The DAAD currently strongly advises against travel to corona risk areas and to countries or regions with a corona travel warning issued by the German Foreign Office. In addition, it is pointed out that the German Foreign Office has ruled out further corona-related emergency return trips by German citizens. Should you nevertheless decide to travel to a Corona risk area or to a country or region with a Corona-related travel warning, you do so at your own risk. Many countries have issued special entry regulations: visas cannot be applied for or entry is not granted despite a valid visa. The current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic therefore also has an impact on the organisation of a semester abroad.

AMD International Services is currently working on the basis of facts and information that may change at short notice. At the moment, nobody can predict how the situation will develop. We keep all applicants and students who are currently in a semester abroad up to date.

Studies at partner universities in the academic year 2021/22

The International Services are preparing the stays abroad for the coming year as usual. We are currently assuming that it will be possible for semester abroad programs to take place in the winter semester 2021/22 and summer semester 2022. Many partner universities are currently using a hybrid model so that lectures are held partly in attendance and partly online.

However, we ask for your understanding if, in view of future, currently unforeseeable developments, applications have to be cancelled at short notice and stays cannot be realized. This is especially the case if travel warnings take effect or the host university is unable to accept guest students due to the situation in the respective country.

If this situation is too uncertain for you or you cannot/do not want to wait any longer due to planning, there is always the possibility to cancel the semester abroad at any time. We advise you to do this as late as possible, but before you make any expenses that cannot be refunded.

A possible postponement to the following semester can be considered after consultation. Please contact the International Services Team for this purpose.
